The Highsmith Construction story begins in 1952 when Farris Highsmith constructed his first custom home on the grounds of what is now the historic Honey Horn Plantation on the north end of Hilton Head Island. Long before Hilton Head Island was nationally recognized tourist destination – even before there was a bridge connecting the island to mainland.
At just 12 years of age Joe Highsmith began spending his summers working for his father, developing a keen understanding of the construction process and custom home building at a very young age. Joe went on to earn a Construction Science degree from Clemson University’s School of Architecture and returned to Hilton Head Island to carry on the family business.
